Expert Interview with Tyler Thorne

General Experience & Background

  1. Can you tell us about your background and what led you to start your fencing company? I was doing schooling for firefighting and paramedics, and building on the side for money. I was pretty successful building fencing, so I just started building full-time. I’m still doing rural firefighting in my town!
  2. How long have you been in the fencing industry, and what changes have you seen over the years? I’ve been in the business for 12 years. The biggest change has been the cost of materials rising after COVID.
  3. What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced in the fencing business, and how did you overcome them? As we’ve expanded, we’ve needed to grow our team. Finding good, reliable team members to help year after year has been a challenge, and I’m proud of the team we have today.

Industry Expertise

  1. What types of fencing materials do you specialize in, and why do you recommend them to your customers? We specialize in wood and chain link fencing. They’re great for protecting your property, and wood fences offer a lot of privacy.
  2. Can you walk us through the process of selecting the right fence for a property? What factors do you consider? The main factors we consider are the needs of our clients—things like the designs they want, how much space the fence will fill, and the budget. Privacy is another important one, and a lot of our clients are getting these fences to keep their kids and pets in the yard. Property protection is another big one.
  3. How do you ensure the durability and longevity of the fences you install? The most important thing is confirming that the post/foundation of the fence is done correctly because that's where it all starts. The design of the wood fence build is important too.

Customer Relations & Projects

  1. Can you share a case study or story about a particularly challenging fencing project you completed successfully? Not off the top of my head; every project has its own challenges, but we’ve got a great team, and we’ve never seen a project we can’t handle.
  2. What advice would you give to homeowners or businesses looking to install a new fence? The depth of the posts being set and the design of the fence are important to confirm there is no shifting during our Winnipeg winters. Quality of build is important with our weather.
  3. How do you approach customer service, especially when it comes to custom or complex fencing projects? Hands-on and face-to-face meetings to confirm that the needs of the client are met. You can’t know what a person needs until you see the property and talk to them in person.

Trends & Innovations

  1. How do you stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and materials in fencing? Stays pretty consistent in my line of work. People have been building fences for a long time; hard work, good materials, and the right build for the project are all you need.
